The Brief: The annual report publication required a functional design with an engaging, memorable and fresh approach reflecting the vision and values of the Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria.

Front Cover: Nighttime photography vibrates with energy inspiring the look and feel of this unexpected annual report design.

Reflecting the Culture of the Organisation: Sensitively selected photographic images reflect the ideas connecting with culture of the RBGV.

Strobes of Light: The graphic forms used in the design were inspired by strobes of light, connecting to the Lightscape event. The ever-evolving RBGV had the creative vision to engage with an audience who may not have considered visiting the Gardens, by producing Lightscape, a sell-out lighting spectacular drawing crowds in the middle of the Melbourne winter.

Harmony and Balance: Considered design, delivers a dynamic and engaging spread. By using my original photographs taken at the Lightscape event, this publication design upturns expectations and presents the RBGV not as a green natural wonderland by day, but instead as a vivid glowing Lightscape by night.

Contents Spread: Thumbnail images and clear typographic hierarchy deliver clear navigation and compelling visual interest to the publication.

Gentle Rounded Corners: To convey a sense of welcoming, gentle rounded corners were used throughout the design, embodying the values of the Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria.

Graphic Devices: Inspired by the vivid colours in the original photography, hot pink was used for headings and design elements, guiding the eye around each spread and communicating warmth and excitement.

Tabling the Facts: Carefully constructed tables effectively convey financial facts while incorporating the vivid design style.

Data Visualisation: Using undulating and inter-relating forms, and cleverly-crafted icons, data is conveyed quickly and effectively.

Visual Balance: Considered use of contrast produces a harmonious spread. Full of energy, excitement and visual stimulation, this annual report design prompts readers to consider the Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria from a new perspective—an illuminated nocturnal lightscape.

Pull Quotes: Considered and well-crafted typographic hierarchy allow key excerpts to attract the eye.

Back Cover: A curated graphic device leads the reader around the publication, delivering an harmonious end to the work.
